Dubai: Residents wishing to sponsor family members in Dubai now have to submit their bank statements to the residency department, Gulf News has learnt.
The move is to ensure people on very low salaries do not bring their families into the emirate.
According to new rules set by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) all those applying for a new residency visa for their families must provide a bank statement showing their monthly salary.
Illegal action
“Those who wish to bring their family members to Dubai on a residence visa must present the GDRFA with the sponsor’s bank statement,” a senior official said.
At least three months’ bank statements are required for those who have already been living here and want to bring their families to the UAE and at least one month’s salary statement or a bank letter confirming the salary transfer for those new to the country and who want to sponsor their families. The rule does not apply for those renewing visas for their families.
He said that previously applicants had to submit a labour contract showing their salary and a salary certificate from the company. The official said this was no longer enough and bank statements were also required.
He said this step had been taken because some people had been submitting a salary certificate or labour contract which showed a higher salary than they actually received.
“We have seen some illegal action involving companies giving their employers salary certificates which state a higher salary than the one they are receiving to help them bring their families here,” the official said.
“Such behaviour is unacceptable,” he added.
“We have come across cases in which the salary of a person who wants to sponsor his family was less than Dh2,500 but they provided us with a salary certificate for Dh10,000,” he said.
“We are asking for a bank statement in order to avoid this happening,” he said.
Medical certificate
He said a bank statement is required only from those applying for a new residence visa for their families.
Those renewing their family’s residency visas are not required to submit bank statements. A bank statement is also not required from those applying for a visit visa for their family members.
The official said new residency visa application will not be accepted without a supporting bank statement.
“People need a proper amount of money in order to live. How can a person bring families here if they earn very low salaries?” the official said.
Those who want to bring their spouse, children, or parents on humanitarian grounds are required to undergo the necessary procedures, including submitting a medical certificate for family members over 18. They must submit their labour card, a copy of their employment contract and salary certificate in addition to their bank statement and tenancy contract, which should be in the name of the applicant, and also an ID card.
The sponsor’s salary should be at least Dh4,000 a month plus accommodation. A salary of Dh10,000 is required if a person wishes to sponsor their parents.

I would like to obtain a visit visa for my brother. What are the necessary conditions for it, what will be the term of visa, is it renewable on expiry and what are the charges applicable? If the visa expires and the visitor exits the country, is it possible to obtain a new visa?
The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs requires the following for this purpose:
1. The applicant’s salary shall be Dh5,000 plus accommodation or Dh6,000 without accommodation.
2. Original employment contract attested by the relevant authority.
3. Visit visa charges of Dh620 and Dh2,000 as guarantee.
4. Period of visit visa may be for 30 days non-renewable and non-extendable; or
5. For a period of 90 days for Dh1,120 and a guarantee of Dh2,000 refundable at the expiry of visa and exit from country. Also, this visa is non-renewable and non-extendable.
Finally, if the visa holder, whether for 30 or 90 days, exits the country, he may obtain a new visit visa 30 days after the date of departure.

Tremors from Iran earthquake felt across the UAE | GulfNews.com

Al Ain: A massive earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit Iran, with tremors felt in the UAE, Oman, Pakistan and India.
The tremors forced people to rush out of homes and offices to open areas.
The earthquake’s epicentre was at the border region of Pakistan and Iran.
Geologists said it was some 139km deep. The quake was felt in the UAE and buildings were rocking as far as Al Ain. Police, Civil Defence and other rescue services are at high alert, however, no damage and casualties have been reported yet.
Geologists have warned the residents that after-shock of such a huge earthquake is expected. In such case, people should stay calm and evacuate buildings in orderly fashion.
Alia, a resident of Barsha, said she’s never experienced an earthquake until Tuesday.
The tremors from the quake were so strong in her Barsha 1 apartment building that items throughout her apartment were shaking.
Some glassware tipped over and broke.
“It was very scary, I was sitting on the couch in our living room and it started shaking all over. It didn’t stop and just kept on shaking,” she said.
When she went into the kitchen, water inside a large pot on the stove was rippling and ceramic plant holders on the window sill were rattling throughout the quake.
“I was very confused, I couldn’t understand what was happening. I was worried our building was going to collapse,” she said.

Burj Khalifa fireworks 2013

Highlights from the 2013 New Year's Eve show at Burj Khalifa, Dubai.

A whopping 1.7 million people turned out to ring in the New Year at Dubai's Burj Khalifa, organisers said on Wednesday.

The Downtown Dubai New Year's Eve Gala featured a spectacular 'Water, Fire and Light' show, capped with a stunning fireworks display off the world's tallest building.

The show was broadcast live to 1,000 global television channels and was livestreamed on YouTube as well Downtown Dubai's official website, reaching an estimated 2 billion people.

"The event underlines the positive vision that Dubai upholds by serving as a beacon of hope for people and highlighting the happiness and robust outlook that the city brings," Mohammed Abbar, chairman of Emaar Properties, said in a statement.

Huge crowds had gathered at the venue to take in the pyrotechnic extravaganza from early evening on December 31.

The massive turnout caused traffic jams around the Dubai Mall and Emaar Boulevard area.  According to reports, up to 500,000 people used the Dubai Metro, which was operating 24 hours on the night.

Emirates Road named after Mohammad Bin Zayed | GulfNews.com

Dubai: As of January 1, 2013, Emirates Road has a new name — Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road.
The name was changed under the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in recognition of Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s role in the UAE’s march of comprehensive development.
Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road is considered one of the key roads in the UAE. The 140km road, 73km of which is located in Dubai, links Dubai with the rest of the emirates.
Easing flow
Since its inauguration in 2001, the road has contributed to easing the flow of traffic for motorists and improving the movement of goods overland.
It also provides smooth passage for trucks, shortening the time they travel on the main roads, therefore ensuring the smooth flow of traffic in internal roads in Dubai and neighbouring emirates.
The road is expected to become an even more integral part of the road network in light of developmental projects being set up along the highway.
Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road has been experiencing a steady increase in the flow of traffic in light of the economic and urban development in the UAE. This increasing traffic flow has been accompanied by a series of projects aiming to develop the road to increase its capacity.
Massive expansion
The massive expansion project undertaken by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority in 2006 has played a significant role in increasing the capacity of the road, increasing the number of lanes from three to six in each direction with a capacity for 12,000 vehicles an hour.
An official at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said around 100 main signs on the road have already been changed and another 150 will be changed in a couple of days.
